building an outdoor arena

I'm not sure which forum group to put this in.

I want to build an outdoor arena in a section of our pasture. I need to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Where I want to build it, it is bordered by two sections of fence. So, I'm not concerned about the fencing.

What I need to figure out is the footing. Where do I start? Do I scrape off the top layer and just have some sand mixed into my soil? Do I just have dirt hauled in and cover the grass and have it leveled off? I will not being doing any jumping. This would just be to ride and warm up in. I'm looking at a 100x100 area.

I live in KS. So, just plain ole dirt is underneath.

Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

At the place where we kept our horses once, all the people chucked in to build an outdoor arena.

They did it reasonably professionally, but one thing they really messed up with was drainage. Come a heavy rain, the water would just sit there for weeks, and clayish soil would hold it underneath. If anyone rode in it they would just pull up clay.

I'm not sure what is going to be good for you and your soil but definately look into it. You might need to add some layers of something else first, or build it up. It would just be pretty annoying if you spent a few thousand to build an arena and you could only ride in it a couple of weeks a year.
