You should do what makes you feel comfortable.

Vests and helmets are still freedom of choice when riding a horse.

I won't wear either and don't what to hear any preaching about it:)

I ride bareback, in tennis shoes, tank tops and shorts.

In 54 years of riding and being tossed off horses, I have only had one head accident. Those horse helmets wouldn't have done me one bit of good as the injury was well below where those helmets cover. A motorcycle helmet would have helped but an equine helmet would have been a waste of the sweat on my head.

If you feel safer in a vest and a helmet, that subconscious "comfort" transfers to the horse, whether you realize it or not, and is a good reason to wear the apparel:)

I hope it's not paranoid, because I've been thinking about getting one. I was really wishing I had one when my new TB took to prancing around and spooking at the two year olds and scary trees this weekend. He was very much a gentleman when I asked him to slow down and be calm, but I'm not sure it will always happen that way, and I'm afraid I've turned in to a big chicken.

There is nothing wrong with using safety equipment, however, don't let it be a crutch or an excuse not to improve your horsemanship skills. It is those skills that will ultimately keep you and your horse out of harm's way. Safety equipment can give some people a false sense of security and they may take more risks.
