Depressed??

So I have always had a mixed herd {geldings/mares} We have downsized in past years to now having 4. In summer we had 5-- 2 geldings & 3 mares. The one gelding suffered an injury required euthanasia so now I have a lone gelding. He & my other gelding 1/2 siblings hung out together & played together, since he is gone his next buddy is his little sister{1/2 sibling}. the other 2 mares are ok with him but really don't want much to do with him & are boss to him in herd position. His Sister the one he spent time with is now gone off for training so he is now left with the 2 bosses
My husband has come in saying I think there is something wrong with that horse He is standing off by himself, often slow to come up for feeding ...but he does come. He is eating/drinking OK,in good weight, not looking sore....just seems depressed. He is friendly & still enjoys getting attention from me but he just is well, not himself...thinking he is just depressed not having a pasture buddy now that my other gelding & younger mare {his pals} are gone. Do horses show depression like that?? or am I reading to much into this?

Could be he is missing buddy, could be he is not feeling quite up to par also.

Have you given him thorough going over, vitals and all.

And make sure he isn't getting short end of stick, if he is odd man out now.

Horses make me a better person.

He certainly isn't missing any meals he wintered well.He was off one day couple weeks ago, some stocking up in pasterns & had temp, decreased appetite.Thought maybe he was going to colic so was watching him closely. Temp was gone next day & has no more stocking up,so not sure what that was all about Have checked him out & no temp, normal HR etc.I had mentioned it to my vet when I was in there & was told to just watch, bring in if symptoms returned. He seems little better mood wise last couple days, actually hanging out with one of the mares part of the time until she decides she has had enough of him & tells him to get lost I was talking to friend & her gelding is pretty much in same situation. His buddy also just left for training & now he is the odd horse out. Was thinking of having her maybe bring him over & stay here then the 2 will have each other . They are similar in age /size & personality,so think that it could work out great.
