Does a bay have to have a dorsale stripe?

My current bay, Citrus, does not have a dorsal stripe.... my first and second horses, both bays, did..... does this mean he is not a true bay?

No they don't need to have one. Just black legs, black mane and tail and black points with a reddish/brown body.

Edit: I looked at your horse and he is a bay :)

Many times a bay will have 'counter shading' but it's not a 'true' dorsal stripe.

It is more uncommon for a bay horse to have the countershading dorsal stripe than it is for them not to have one. I have seen many bays in my life but only a few of them had the appearance of a dorsal stripe. A true dorsal stripe associated with the dun gene is usually very pronounced and, often, the color differential continues into the mane and tail.

It sometimes looks like this.

LOL my bay is a dark bay, so I wouldn't know it even if he did!
