What Dreamcatcher said. I've always told my mares if they expected to be fed and have a clean barn while I was pms'ing then they better do their jobs with no complaints when they were in heat. Seemed to work. I had a mare that I had to pick up her back feet and hand them off to the farrier when she was in heat or she'd try to kick him and another who makes google eyes and wants to rub against any man (2 or 4 legged, makes no difference to her) she sees but those were the only issues I ever had to deal with so those weren't things I couldn't live with. Actually it's pretty funny to watch the one that falls in love with men when she's in flirt mode.

Seriously though, it does seem like their first cycle of the season is the worst. Maybe for now take a wait and see attitude until her next one and if it's still bad then look for solutions. The thing about you being willing not to ride her during her heat cycles may not work because I've seen many a mare that will go into false heat anytime they get around strange horses. That's a huge reason why they need to learn to listen to you no matter what time of the month it is.

I bought this beautiful mare in late January. We test rode her in the night while it was snowing down the road. She passed with flying colors we even had a plow truck drive by her and drag the pavement throwing sparks everywhere and all she did was stop and look at it. We knew she was a little green but saw some great potential in her. Once we got her home we were in for a bit of a shock with how her attitude changed. She was no longer calm, cool, and collected but rather super "flakey". She would constantly grind her teeth, paw the ground to no end, whip her rear end around, spook at nothing, was head shy etc. We tried just telling ourselves she just needed time to adjust but honestly I felt like she was probably drugged up for the sale. So we worked with her just about daily and after about 3 months we saw great improvement. She stopped grinding her teeth, she wasn't digging her feet off (usually), stands nice to be groomed, not easily spooked. We even improved her on other things such as bathing, picking feet, bug spray! (those bottles are EVIL). I thought she was turning into the horse we were looking for and one I could see myself owning for a very long time.

Then it happened! Her first heat cycle. Our farm had newly acquired a gelding who thinks he is still a stud. He got placed in the pen right next to hers and that's when my nightmare began. He put her in full blown heat and she was disgusting. She would do nothing but stand next to the fence peeing on herself and him. If you would take her out of the field she would revert back to serious feet digging and just acting like a total nut job under saddle. She would scream to him literally the entire time. I came to the conclusion that she was just going to be one of those mares you cant do anything with while in heat. I moved her to another field with no studish geldings however that turned out just as bad. She got really close with a gelding (again not studish) and became super buddy sour within just a couple of days and once again taking her from the field was useless. So her heat started to come down and I moved her back to her original field. Things settled down and she went back to being agreeable. We had a few great trail rides and I rode double with a friend a couple times. I thought "ok I guess I can tolerate her being bratty when she's in heat". Things were great for about a week and then WHAM she was in full blown heat again! This time she started bucking which hasn't been a problem with her before and she pins her ears, kicks out and squeals, reaches around to bite you and just acts like a monster all the way around. So she has had two full blown heat cycles in three weeks and I feel like all the time and effort I have put into her has been wasted.

P.S. I have checked for other issues that may be causing her "anger" but nothing else is bugging her. we've had the vet check her teeth, switched up saddles, had her back checked, rode her in a side pull but nothing has any affect.

I am seriously starting to hate mares. Every mare I have owned has been a complete witch and I just don't enjoy all the attitude. She is by far the worst I have had. I have had geldings before and they are always so much more enjoyable. Their friendly and sweet and most importantly much more reliable and consistent. I am sure there are nasty geldings and sweeter mares but so far my experiences have just not been good with mares. I am about to swear them off forever. Sorry for my long rant but it feels good to just get it out of my system
Aww, bless her little evil mare heart. She's in love!
