Of course it is. Plenty of folks have competitive goals, but can only afford one horse. The logical and advisable thing is to sell the other horse as the riders skill progresses. In the case of your horse, it was a lie. But it seems the person thought it a plausible story.

I rarely give credence to the back story of most of horses I work with.

Sadly its a thing.

Kenzie was with her breeder/Owner for most of her life, only sold once when she was about 7 and coming back after she was blown up on barrels. Her papers only show the two owners and now me. Her breeder had her about 18 years of her life, and you all saw how skinny she was and how badly she had ulcers and she just sold her to me.

Who told you the story about the old owners being sick? Could they possibly know more?

His name is Flare on there! Sounds like that was a name the cataloging people gave him though. From what I've read, his name was Diamond when he was dropped off.

I like Flare too! Fabio Flare sounds nice too - maybe that should be his 'show name' if there's ever a need for one! Haha :)

True! It just always confused me because he was sold with the warning of being a bolter, but he wasn't hot enough for gymkhana? Different strokes, I guess...

I read it on his Facebook post through that Auction Horse organization.
That's basically all it said. They got the information off a note that was dropped off with Fabs and the horse he arrived with, Falcon.

I emailed the auction house and they already emailed me back, asking more questions, maybe, hopefully, they'll fill me in a bit more at some point...

How crazy that you tracked that down!

It's amazing all the information we have access to online these days.

I hope they get back to you with more info!

It is SO crazy that I tracked that down!

I have occasionally done other searches for him [mostly trying to see if I could find photos of him from one of the gymkhana's he supposedly took part in - the gymkhanas I now know do not exist. haha] but nothing ever showed up.

This time, I googled "Fabio Oregon Quarab" and somehow the "Sold Horses" Auction Horses webpage was one of the top results - it was a hit on the word "quarab". That sort of thing is really interesting to me, so I ended up just looking through the horses for fun.
I looked through the 2013 page for fun, then continued on to the 2012 page...and bam! There was Fabio's face staring back at me!

Totally unexpected. And great.
It explains SO much about him, and helps remind m to be sensitive with him Not that I wasn't sensitive to him before, but I kind of assumed he had more training based on the old-story-lie.
This truth explains his lack of knowledge and, potentially, some of his aversion to moving out - a little old man on a trail ride might not have cantered much or asked him to really move out so it makes perfect sense why Fabs is so "what are you DOING, human?!!" when I ask him to move out. haha
Part of his "unwillingness" is definitely the PSSM, but the remainder may be solid inexperience - vs "just being a jerk" like I kind of assumed.
