First bad day in a longgggg time
Today Apollo and I had our first bad day in a longgggg time...I was finally to the point of being able to hop on him without having to lunge him first which I was super happy about. I've been riding him bareback regularly which is awesome too, considering it took forever for him to accept it.
Last February he turned into a hot head and turned into a bucking bronc if you sat in the saddle. After months of work I was finally able to ride him and it has been 5 months of riding him consistently under saddle...he has been doing so well.
It was really cold and rainy today so all of the horses came in early since the rain was not letting up. He was awesome in the cross ties and I took my sweet time grooming him and even trimmed his whiskers. I threw on the bareback pad and bridle and headed into the indoor arena where there were 3 other people riding. He was being a little antsy but I figured it was because I hadn't ridden him in a couple days and he was feeling good because of the cooler weather. I got on and we walked a few laps each direction because I was lazy and didn't really want to do anything.
The other 3 riders decided to exit the arena so I was keeping his attention by doing some small circles and bending while they left. He heard them leaving and he flung his head in the air, called to them in panic and started tossing his head in every direction and was backing up and trying to spin in their direction to join them. I finally got him to stand still for a second so I could slide off and I did a bunch of ground work with him until he finally settled down and I had his attention. He calmed down after a minute or two but I continued to do some ground work and lunge him to get some energy out. I would have stayed on and rode him through it if I had a saddle on, but I didn't want to risk falling. I hadn't ridden him indoors in a few weeks and the last time I did no one entered or left the arena during our ride so we didn't have any distractions since we were riding alone. We always ride alone and even on our trails we venture off from the group on our own and he is completely fine...in the outdoor he doesn't mind if horses enter and leave but for some reason he cares when we are in the indoor...
I haven't had a bad day in sooooo long and I really wasn't expecting him to act like this because he has been an angel lately...I'm really hoping it's because of being cooped up all morning/the drastic change in weather from it being almost 100 degrees last week to it being in the high 60s and storming today, and this isn't going to be a regular thing for him :( thanks for listening to my rant.
