Freeze Branding??

I have been thinking about freezer branding my horse and was wondering if anyone had any Experiance with this. I have been told that I can do it myself but I'm not sure. If I don't do it how do I find someone who can?

I suppose it depends on why you are freeze branding? Most people are doing it to prevent theft and if you have a large number of horses or have a family brand it may make sense. Then again, microchipping is less expensive, although there are some arguments that they are less effective when we talk about finding lost horses.

I have seen folks on here talking about freeze branding. You can do it yourself, but you need to research it. Designing a brand, getting it out of the appropriate materials, and preparing the area are all a little different than they are with hot branding. In addition, freeze brands do have their own disadvantages, they can be difficult to read, and some argue that they are more painful than hot brands.

First you will need to design your brand and get it approved by your state for a specific location on your horse (rt shoulder, etc) and decide what size you want - needs to be big enough to see but not so large to look gaudy. Many suggest a 3 inch or so brand.

Once you get your brand design you can Google search for brand makers. Most will clearly state which types of brands will work for freeze brands vs hot branding.

As to branding - you can do it yourself with dry ice. Most of the brands will come with directions telling you how long to hold it on. Don't forget to hold it on longer for grays and other light coat colors to kill the fur. However, for brand clarity you may prefer someone else to do it. I would talk to locals - vets, feed stores, and/or brand inspectors if your state has them for suggestions on who can do it for you in your area.

You may also want to check with Kryo Kinetics. They use freeze brands similar to mustangs to put a unique ID on your horse. No matter what state your horse ends up - they will be able to trace the horse, unlike regular freeze brands that are registered by state so if the horse ends up across state lines they may not be able to figure out whose brand it is.

All I pay my psychiatrist is cost of feed and hay, and he'll listen to me any day!

He is the only horse I have but there have been some thefts in my area that got me to thinking about doing it. I don't think I could do it myself I don't have very steady hands for something like that. I will look at the Kryo Kinetics though I have designed a brand that I am trying to get approved with the state. Also if I move him from one state to another do I need to register it with the new state? I live right by the state line and plan on buying a place soon and it may be in the other state.
