As someone who has spent a lot of time with OTTB's I have to say that the racing industry borders on inhumane. I agree it is exciting to watch but brings tears to my eyes when all those horses are whipped to the finish post. People wonder why they have so much trouble re training ex racehorses.

Back home (in Australia) they tried to introduce rules regarding the number of times a horse can be whipped in the home straight. This was met with huge protests from the racing industry and Jockeys association in particular.

As for steeplechasing (again exciting to watch) they are still trying to ban the sport due to the HUGE number of horses that had to be shot on the track after breaking legs/necks trying to catapult themselves over fences at full speed. Again this is being met with huge resistance.

Then all the horses that aren't fast enough are discarded, often to the knackery. It's a disgrace. I am not familiar with the racing industry here in America but I suspect it is much the same.

Breaks my heart.

All horses deserve, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl.

I am not saying I know more then her. I am saying she doesnt need to tell me how to run my life with my horse. or if I can or cant watch horse racing. Thats why I vented.
Because she nagged to me about liking horse racing. Not because she tells me what to do.
She doesnt.
She just doesnt need to tell me what to do with my mare. I know my mare she doesnt know my mare.
I know a TON about horses. I am not an experienced horse person but I know a TON i study I do everything to get to be more experienced with my horses and all the horse world. I have family that are horse trainers.

Something I have learned in life - You can never know all there is to know so listen when others speak.

Smart people listen. Not so smart people think they do not need to hear what others have to say.

If there was ever a phrase to be adopted as the official slogan of the HorseForum, this is it.

You're correct, it's very much the same here in the U.S.

It bothers me that they break TBs while they're still babies, many as long yearlings.

Maybe if they weren't raced so young, there wouldn't be so many breakdowns. It's a damned, dirty, crying shame what happened to Barbaro and many others like him, but it doesn't surprise me. You just can't put that much strain on babies and not expect something bad to happen.

At the end of racing season, you can go down any shedrow and have your pick of TBs who couldn't cut it as race horses. That's how I got JJ; he stank as a racer!

I can see why your acquaintance doesn't like racing, Eventers. However, since she knows you do like it, y'all should just agree not to discuss the subject any longer.
