goodbye Texas, hello Eddie!

well i didn't think this would happen so soon.........

i'm switching lease horses!

getting out to the barn where Texas is is just getting to be too much for me. Either i kill my knees riding my bike the 21 mile round trip or i have to grovel and beg for a ride from friends/family, either paying gas or buying a quick meal on the way for them....... which adds up after a while. Not what i envisioned when i signed the lease papers

so i went looking for a better situation.......... and found it!

going to be leasing a nice little horse named Eddie. he's pretty much the opposite of Texas, lol. Texas is big and tall and loud in colour (paint) and Eddie is compact, short (about 15.1 hands), and solid chestnut with just a tiny snippet of white on his forehead. he's had reining training but hasn't been ridden at all in 'a few months'.

best part is......... Eddie's owner is agreeable to move Eddie to a barn super close to where i live. so stoked! this means i can get out to the barn just about every night, and can bike there without hurting myself - no hills en route, yay!

I am sad to say goodbye to Texas, but when a situation isn't working the way you thought it would, you have to do what you have to do to change the situation to the better.

i'm excited for August 1st. will post photos of Eddie once the lease starts.

he's a cute lil ******, lol. i'd already taken to calling him 'baby' about 10 minutes after i met him last night.

and to ride him is so different from Texas!!! although i do enjoy riding Texas, the big lug is so heavy on the forehand, it's like riding the letter "U" around the arena sometimes, lol. soon as i got on Eddie for our test ride, even though he hadn't been ridden for a while, he rounded that rear end under himself nicely and went to work in frame and fairly nicely collected. his jog isn't nearly as smooth as Texas, but that's ok. Eddie does have a small 'behind the vertical' habit, but he was in a snaffle with quasi constant contact from me as opposed to the ported curb his owner says he was riding him in before his few months off. we'll figure it all out and learn from each other what works for both me and Eddie :)

here's my new Eddie horse, doing his best lawn mower impersonation in the yard, lol. not the greatest picture, but i don't claim to be a great photographer at all.

i went out last night just to hang out, groom, and get to know him one on one for a bit. had a 2 minute gentle walk around the arena with just halter and bareback (unfortunately couldn't have a 'real' ride because the little monkey had lost a shoe sometime since monday night when i was there. grrr...... lol. don't worry folks, his hoof is fine, looks like the shoe basically fell off, no hoof damage), and he was so good, calm, listening very nicely It was our first ride since he came 'home' on saturday. i'd hand walked him around the arena twice before so it wasn't a brand new space for our first ride, and he has taken absolutely everything in stride, minus his 'talking' to his buddies as i'm collecting him from pasture, lol. his new best friend is a little pony who's not even 11 hands tall. so cute.

and a neat panoramic shot of the yard, tack shed, round pen, little 2 stall barn, etc. i love my 'second home' :) hope the photo didn't turn out too tiny for y'all to see it.
