I live in an area not so conducive to...contained riding. :-| There's urban trail, and yappy dogs, cyclists, quads that aren't supposed to be there, and just all kinds of weird distractions I don't want to risk my life over the first time I ride my new mare. I would like an arena to work in.
So I've been looking for an arena since before I got her. And I discovered...There aren't many in this town :?
There are:
*THREE boarding stables--two of which have arenas that they rent out hourly for $$ if you have all your health paperwork in order.
*A stockyard type arena also rentable, for $$$$$.
*A private neighbordhood arena, well maintained, but only available to homeowners in the neighborhood who have a key (I wish I had a friend out there. lol)
*An equine oriented neighborhood has an indoor AND an outdoor, rentable, but can't get ahold of the people yet.
*An arena exclusive to the sherriff's posse.
I was pretty bummed--then I remember an arena I've seen in an out of the way rural neighborhood, that's always vacant. I drove out there and checked it out. It's nice, HUGE roping arena, and no one uses it. I got ahold of the owner...It's not public, and he hardly lets anyone use it, BUTTTTTTTTT he agreed to let me use it! YAAAAAAY! I'm so excited! For very, very cheap too. He's very nice. And it backs several hundred acres of forest service, all the way to reservation, so I can take her out on trails too! Very happy and excited today!
Just had to share my happy story! Also...DOES ANYONE ELSE RIDE ON CINDER SAND? ANY OPINIONS????????????
Also, riding a trail horse in an arena, should I worry about her getting bored with just trotting cantering backing up, and working on cues? Should I be setting up cones and other things to keep her entertained? Any advice would be GREAT!
