Alright, you know what, I recently ran across a website all about barefoot trimming and realized that she needed some improvement in trimming. I was actually planning on opening a thread to get some input about her hooves. I'll do that tomorrow, so instead of crowding up Crickett's thread, we can discuss there.

Her feet were really long this winter. Usually we get their last trim in November/December and then not again until February or March. Her feet grew a lot more, I guess because of being pregnant and all. They are not usually that long. March-November we get them trimmed every 4-6 weeks, as usual.

It sounds like you want to learn, and so I am not bashing you. Heck we don't know what we don't know.

I am not a hoof expert, I messaged someone who is, and asked them to respond.

It's ok to not know everything. I certainly don't - but a willingness to hear is important.

6 weeks should be normal, 3 months isn't. Either way, you need a new farrier. It's not your fault, we should be able to trust the people we pay, whether that's a plumber or a vet. We can't know it all.

Ok, thank you a lot. Non of the other horses' (3) hooves grew that much. We usually let them go over the winter and they basically stop growing and just need a little trim up in the spring. We've never had any problems with that. But anyway, I'll get some pictures of her now and open thread. Thank you for not chopping off my head. :)

Well I went through and read Tiara's foaling thread, and I must say that you have a beautiful mare and a very handsome colt! What are your future plans for Crickett?

Thank you! He is a beauty. :)
Well, I am hoping to take him to college with me. He will be about 4 or 5, which is when I am planning on breaking him. So I would like to be able to take him and train him while I'm there. More future plans; probably eventing. I'm going to start with Tiara either this year or next year for sure. So I'll take him as far as he can go, when he grows up :)
We'll probably also do lots of trail riding, both pleasure and competitive, and driving as well. Basically, just a great, all-rounder like Tiara.

I have a question for knowlegable people. He was born with 4 white hooves, which he still has. Will his hooves darken with age, or is he always going to have white hooves? I thought that was very uncommon for Haflingers, to have 4 white feet. All of the ones I've met have had at least 2 or 3 black hooves. Our 2 have 3 black ones, and 1 white hind with a black stripe, while the black hind has a white stripe. I know his body will darken with age, but so will his hooves?

And what do you think of the myth that white hooves are softer than black; true or false?

I'll upload some current pictures tomorrow. He is really coming along with his training. He leads great now, and we will be starting tieing soon. Today, we left him in the paddock, and walked Tiara away, and he did not care one bit. Even when she was out of sight, he was occupied by snorkling in the water trough and neighing to the other horses, who were thundering across the pasture about a mile away. We have his first show set too, a friend's fun "Just Ponies" show on the 30th. It's only 10 minutes away, and everyone's very friendly and understanding, so if he's going nuts, we can just take him home or something. But I think he'll be fine. He's done nothing but surprise us so far.

He is growing a lot. I measure him at about 215lbs today. Is that big fr almost 4 weeks? He also has a big, strong cresty neck and seems to be losing some baby fur too. :)

Ooh, just found recent pictures. Here you are...

Showing off his new teeth. This was about a week and a half ago, he now has 4 teeth with about half an inch of each on.

First farrier visit. He did really good. She didn't actually trim anything, but just messed around with his feet.

"And we're off to go do something else strange and pointless."
First wagon ride alongside mom. He did great, besides nearly being runover several times. :0

Just hangin' out

"Look at MEE!"
