Happy Gelding Day To Red

I had my little man gelded today. I am so relieved to have it over with. No more worrying about whether or not he is capable of breeding his mom, or if the flies will be too bad if I wait any longer, or if he'll become unmanageable and dangerous from all the hormones. It's done and now I can relax. Not literally of course. Apparently I need to work him pretty hard a couple times a day for the next few days.

When I think about the experiences I've had just from the purchase of what was supposed to be my one and only trusty trail horse, I realize I've been on quite the ride.
I've had the experience of owning a pregnant mare, and the thrill of waiting for her to foal. I've had the experience of raising a foal from day one and owning a stud colt until he was almost a year. Now I have the privilege of owning my very first gelding after three years of mares. Things I would have never chosen to do myself, I'm glad I was forced into doing them.

I snapped a couple pictures from today.
The vet gettin in there. Funny story, the vet and his assistant actually laughed at how small Red's testicles were. I have to admit, they looked like two little ping pong balls.

And a couple hours later when he was finally aloud to eat again. Poor thing wasn't aloud to eat all day.

Yay Red! And don't feel bad, everyone at the vet awwed and laughed at how tiny Henny's were.

There on the tips of fair fresh flowers feedeth he; How joyous his neigh,
there in the midst of sacred pollen hidden, all hidden he; how joyous his neigh

So you're saying we've done them a huge favor, saving them from a lifetime of embarrassment? No one will ever know.

YES! That is the first thing mares look at on a stallion you know! Reminds me when I was showing a stallion at halter. My daughter was showing her horse in the same class and we were both getting ready for the class, I asked her for the highliter and she said don't forget to oil up his testicles. Huh? She said oh yes, he's a stallion, you highlite those Muth-er! So I did and we won, hah!

Lol Karen that is the oddest thing I've heard! But yes, Whisper, we saved them from whispers and giggles on the playground from the other fillies and colts.
