Heard a new stereotype

Earlier this week was the first time I've ever been told that Arabian have thin, scraggly manes. Thin to the point of being able to see the neck through the hair. I was told my guy's mane is the thickest she's ever seen on an Arabian.

Really? In all my years of working with them, I've never seen or heard this one. Has anyone else?

It's not their manes that can be thin and scraggly, it's their tails. Person is misinformed.

Agree - if there is a deficiency it's going to be a tail. I'm on my second Arab cross now and she has a beautiful thick mane and forelock but, alas, the tail is sadly wanting in comparison (hers will grow out nicely in the winter but is quickly wore down over the summer getting it snagged in the pasture and swatting bugs).

I heard one about AQHAs as well- the same thing- thin scraggly manes as well. My mare is half appy, half quarter, but has a decent mane and tail... I was told she was lucky on both counts, since quarters can have the mane and tail scrag just like appys. I don't know if I know this, but man, looking at all the wild mustangs... that must be where the fabios are at! lol Our BLM gelding has hair TO DIE for!! I am certain he makes my mare very jealous! :P

But my friend's mustang gelding has a pretty scraggly mane & tail - not really thin, but short, maybe 5-6 inches for mane hair, while my appendix mare's mane is about a foot. So maybe it's more of an individual characteristic than a breed one?

You haven't been around a lot of Arabians, then. Many of them have tails that won't grow much past their hocks unless extreme measures are taken. I have a 27 y/o who has an amazingly lush mane, but his tail is nothing to write home about.

On the other hand, I have a 15 y/o who has both a full mane and tail. He's gray, so looks like a little Pretty Princess Pony!

MOST Arabians?? How then did I have a herd of 24, all running out in pasture with timber, and every one of them with tails brushing the ground at rest. I've had large numbers of Arabians since 1981, and never noticed your "hock rule". Extreme measures? They are fed well, and brushed out just enough to keep the tangles out.

Glad I wasn't the only one who hasn't heard that one before. I like the princess pony image. Lol!

I've seen thinner tails, but I don't think I've seen one that doesn't grow long. I'm used to cutting tails to keep them shorter. My gut had a thin-ish tail, but I keep having to trim it back because it drags so long on the ground.

I don't think she's been around many at all. Makes me glad she got out of the pre-vet program - among other ignorant comments.

Definitely never heard that one. Although, I am not really around a lot of arabs/ arab people. But I do know one woman with a bunch of them and they all have crazy thick manes and tails! Like to the point, if they were mine I would pull them to thin them out a bit.

Have yet to meet a scraggly Arab lol here's my girl freshly washed and brushed. Normally shes a frizz ball so it looks even thicker most of the time. She has so much mane it overflows on the other side quite a bit. Its a love hate relationship lol pretty but major maintenance

For the record, I have "been around" Arabians since 1981, as a breeder and trainer. I have owned, or handled, more that 300 Arabians (that I can think of) in those years. So I kinda do have some idea.
