Its usually for an extended vacation--I'd say more than three days. Since boarding is usually expensive and sometimes is a hassle, house/pet sitting is a nice alternative. Usually you have to keep to the animals normal schedule with feeding and walks and such, but high maintenance pets usually have owners who can pay well!
House sitting--since I mentioned it--is also a good option. Again, for people who are going to be on vacation for like, 2 or 3 weeks. You can go and water their plants, make sure they haven't sprung a leak anywhere and nothings been stolen, and leave!
