New question, how do you manage your watering system? Do you have one base pasture that they come in to drink at, or a water-er in each pasture? Do you have ponds?

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again

Ponds and creeks in the big pastures. A well and stock tanks at the barns.

We have 100 gallon water tanks set up near the barn. I put heaters in them during the winter months. They have to come in off their pasture into the corrals where the water tanks are but the gate is left open so that they always have access to them.

Unfortunately, we do not have a permanent natural water source (only a ravine that only has water in it during extremely wet periods) available in the pastures.

Are your heaters solar powered?

No, they're electric. I run 2 large ones, I believe they're 1500 watts for the 100 gallon tanks (horses are kept in 2 different herds), and then a small bucket deicer for the cats water and it will jump the electric bill up by about $70.00 in a month where they have to remain plugged in the whole time.

They're supposed to be thermostat controlled and come on at 40 degrees, shut off at 50 but I don't think they do what they say in that area so they get unplugged anytime the temps are above freezing.
