How to change registration to my name??

I used to know know how to do this, but have forgotten. Last year I bought an OTTB mare. She's great, I did hours of work with her to get her where she's at. But I had another baby this year, and she's not getting the love and attention she deserves. So with a sad heart I have decided to sell her, and buy a horse a few years down the road, when my children are a bit older. I could make it work last year, but with a newborn, it just isn't working.
SO anyway...when I bought her she wasn't registered to the owner. I was going to get it done but of course never got to it. My question is how do I find who she was last registered to and get it changed to my name?? And does it really make a big difference on selling price?
She has so really good horses in her pedigree, Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Bold Ruler, to name a few. Just hoping I can get a good price for her to put into savings for another horse down the road.

So you have the papers with the old owner's name on them? Or do you not have any papers at all?

If you have the papers with the old owner's name, then track them down and have them sign off on ownership, and then register the horse to your name (at least I am assuming you can do this, as I did it with APHA papers). It will cost a fee to get new papers with your name, but may be worth it to sell her with those papers.

If you do not have them at all, I really do not know if you can get them.

As far as if it matters, it completely depends on who you are selling to. Some people like papers, others don't give a crap either way. If the horse is going to be used to show or breed, then papers are desirable. If she is going to be just a trail horse or fun show horse, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Did she race? If not, she may not even be registered with the Jockey Club, and they're the only TB registry.

I hate to tell you, but even if she's JC registered, unless she's a finished horse, you're not going to get a whole lot of money for her. TBs are pretty much a dime a dozen, and one that's not finished is even less special. Most TBs have all those stallions in their pedigrees, so she's not even amazingly bred.

I also wish people would stop trying to compare TB Jockey Club registration to their own breed registry. The JC doesn't work the same way. People DON'T send in registrations to the JC to change ownership. All a previous owner does is sign the registration papers and hand them over to the new owner. That's it, no sending them in to the JC, no fees, and no new papers with the new owner's name on them.

TB registration papers are essentially useless unless an owner is planning to race or breed a horse.

Honest mistake. I had no idea it was so different from the APHA, but then again I said in my post that I did not know if it was like APHA or not. I assumed. But thank you for clarifying.

I wouldn't bet on getting much for her due to her pedigree.

Those names are as common as dirt in any OTTBs bloodline...

Ours is related to Northern and Native Dancer, Secretariat, Man o War, Bold Ruler multiple times, and even international superhorses like Ribot and Ambiorix, and can trace his lineage back to the fabulous Tetrarch through his amazing daughter Mumtaz Mahal....AND he has 3 Tripel crown winners in his bloodline: Secretariat, Count Fleet and War Admiral....

Not to mention that his grandsire is the well known Danzig....

And we bought him dirt cheap. SR is right.... bloodlines mean little.

You will NOT get a good price for her based on her pedigree I can assure you. it's just a piece of paper...and in the OTTB world, MOST horses have some big names in their pedigree..

What is her training discipline? And how much potential does she show in it? Does she have show experience? Is she a good jumper?

These are the questions most buyers are interested in....

I think everyone assumes the same thing Lakota, until they actually decide to buy/take on a TB. The only reason I know it is because I have JJ now. I've always had Arabians, and their registry works the same way as the APHA.
