How do you have fun with your horse?

I'm getting my first horse soon, so this is the first time I will actually get to handle and care for a horse without having to worry about an owner chasing me away with a broom

I've always seem to have had bad luck in my learning experience in that I only rode my lesson and then did maintenance work, which I loved, but I never got to understand what makes it "fun." So what do YOU do that makes horses a lot of fun? Is it mainly hanging out with friends with a similar interest? Is it the shows? Do you go and toss a ball around with your horse? Teach it tricks?

Also, what do you do when there aren't trails at the boarding stable you go to? Do you just go out in the street? Do you just waltz around the property?

For fun I go for a gallopy hack, there are lots of bridleways and byways near us, or we box to a xc course to play with some jumps or put some up in the field, or just school - to be honest just being with the horses is fun

I love just spending time in the pastures, observing herd behavior and interacting with my horse at liberty. That's also a great way how to show your horse that you're not always equal to work and work only, and that may assist in helping him become a more willing partner. Be safe and sure about your personal space when hanging out with the herd, though!

I also enjoy going on long trail walks in hand - a great way to keep fit your own body and to show your horse new places, graze on wild herbs, etc.

I spend a lot of time with my horse just sitting with her, following her around and watching things she does. If you have homework, do it sitting in their stall/pasture! Put a blanket down if you don't want to get your stuff dirty.
I do lots of grooming, its relaxing and helps you bond.
Like you said you can teach tricks, thats something I really want to start doing myself. You can teach them games, like soccer, to play or hand-walk them through/around/over obstacles you create.

I love to just hang out with my horses. Telling them about my day, imaging what they did with their day. Grooming, hugging. My 8 yr old and I go on trail rides bareback in a bitless bridle. It is very relaxing and she knows it is fun time and not work time, which she loves and appreciates. Bareback is so fun

There are a few things I like to do with my horse.

If I'm not riding, I'm usually on a trail or having my horse follow me around the arena without a lead line! (Great way to bond)

I love to just expose my horse to new things and see how he will react. He usually is quite comical. For example, I made my horse a homemade toy for his stall, for about an hour I just hung out with him in his stall while he happily played with his new toy. It was the highlight of my day watching him toss this bottle filled with treats around!

I usually get on bareback with a halter and just piddle around the barn/farm. I go out for trail riding, I get on her bareback and just let her eat, or usually I'm just out in the field with all the other horses!

Or when I'm doing maintenance work I do it on horseback! There's not a piece of the place where I board that has not been put through my durability test and no where my poor old horse hasn't gone or been put through! lol

Fun for me or fun for the horses? Fun for me is swimming in the lake with my horse, absolutely awesome! For my horse, it would be me letting him out on my lawn so he could eat all my petunias undisturbed.

One of my horses loves the beach (actually water in general), he would be quite happy to spend all day at the beach in the water, rolling in the sand and then having another swim.

My other horse LOVES jumping and going for a hoon. Luckily for him, I take him out eventing. He gets the best of both worlds, lots of jumping at competitions and I will take him out for a gallop occasionally too.

When neither of those options are available, I go and sit in the paddock and hang out with them. They like it because most of the time I bring carrots and apples, I like it because they calm me down and make me happy.

Apart from riding, I just like to hang out with "my" horse friends. I also love to do lots of grooming, they enjoy it as much as I do.

Being horseless is the pits!!
