How to use an ear bonnet?

I've been thinking about using an ear bonnet when riding outside because the flies are just so merciless. I picked up a basic crocheted bonnet yesterday, but am perplexed about the string and loop that are part of it- I guess I never really thought much about it, but I assumed the bridle just kept it in place.

This is probably a dumb question, but does the string just tie under the horse's cheek like another throat latch? How tight do you tie this string? In my mind, this thing went on under the bridle so the bridle would hold it in place, but is that actually right? Or does it go over the bridle?

The ear net goes under your bridle. Personally, I've always cut the string off, as the bridle has always held it on fine and I don't like the look of the string. But if you want the string, yes it goes on like the throat latch. For added strength/support you could weave it with the throat latch, and then pull it through the loop and tie it. If I used the string I would tie it with a easily releasable knot.
