There is no way I would keep a horse who wasn't being used, except for a young girl who has committments to her own horse and can only occasionally do some groundwork and riding. It just isn't fair on the horse, or the person paying for it's upkeep.

I recently did a similar thing - My Arab gelding was sitting doing nothing, so my couin started riding him. But she was unreliable and wouldn't ride for weeks at a time - It just wasn't fair on the horse. So I sent him to a Riding for the Disabled school where he will actually be used and an active member of the community.

I'm so sorry. While it may not be your place to go and yell at your trainer, you can still feel upset about it. You have a right to be

It's one thing to sell the pony but its another thing not to tell the person thats put so much work into her, that she's even for sale. Imagine how you would feel if you were working with a horse, that you fell in love with, and then one day Boom, she was gone. And no one ever told you that she was even for sale, she was just gone. That doesn't sound right to me. It sound selfish, which is exactly what this BO is, and trust me I know, I know her personally.

Yeah it is pretty hard. She wasn't your horse but that isn't to say that you two didnt have a close bond.

These things happened and as hard as it is you can't be mad at your trainer, slightly disappointed maybe. Chin up and it will work out.

You have the right to be sad.

But I have to totally agree with the crowd that says this is not your pony so really you have no right to be mad. Even you say that you did not work with her on a regular basis. Does the BO really need to keep a pony around so you can every now and again work with it when you have some spare time?

Really you should be happy that the pony found a new life where it has a job.

And her not telling you the pony was for sale might be for many reasons (none of which are evil no matter how much some people want to make it out that way). How about the BO did not really have the pony up for sale but an opportunity came along and the pony was the right fit so she sold it. Or how about the trainer knew that selling the pony would upset you so they decided to not tell you. Or maybe the trainer simply did not even think of your relationship when they made a purely business decision.

Running a barn is a business does require a person to make some decisions that might seem selfish to some people. But in the end it is a business.

I am sure, OP, that your horse will totally love that you have more attention to lavish on him now since your time will not be divided.

the same thing happened to me when i had a share on a horse. i paid for alot of the horses expenses, but it wasnt "my" horse. when i went on vacation one summer and came back, the horse was gone. turns out the real owner sold "dell" when i was in florida. i thought that was kinda unfair since i paid for alot of the expenses and i didnt even know the guy was planning on selling Dell, but it happened. i was sad about it, but i just moved on, horse owners are aloud to sell a horse without telling anyone who works with it, it happens all the time. youll find a new horse to work with, or just consentrate on your personal horse
