If the horse has been taken care of all it's life and has good confo, then they can go strong for ages. Boarder's 36 yo quarter mare who passed away this winter was leading the pack on difficult trail rides up until the week of her death. According to her owner she was never lame once in her life.

Another horse I know is around 16 and completely unrideable.

Lilly will be 10 in a few months and will soon be starting competitve trail and distance riding. Pickles just turned 13! I want to do some dressage with him and both horses will eventually be used in mounted search and rescue volunteer work. I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be able to do this. Some people are prone to passing up horses who are over 15...I say if the animal is healthy and sane, they're missing out.

Well I just brought an 8 year old tb gelding who only finished racing last October, and has done nothing since. Yes people has said 'he's too old to train'. Well i laugh at them. So far he has shown immense trainability and willingness to learn. Yet there are others that at 8 having done nothing, it will be too late to really get them on a good path.
So i think age is also very much to do with the temperament of the horse and the physical and mental state. Some horses at 15 will look like they're 30, others at 30 will look like they're 15.

when i was younger, i used to take lessons on a 34ish year old morgan QH cross. i would jump him 18 inch cross rail courses, w/t/c, trail ride, he could be ridden for 2 hours straight too.

he died about a year ago, but he lived to be about 40 and he stayed ridable til the end
