I have no idea what to buy!

I am stuck between wanting to buy more saddle pads/tack, a new helmet (I have one of those ovation schooling ones - it’s my first one, so it’s time for a move up, I think), an eventing vest, or new tall boots (used of course, though) because the zipper broke on my current ones. Help?

What do you need the most?

Saddle pads/tack - if your current tack fits and is functional, then I would put this off.
New helmet - as long as it fits and it's not cracked, I would put this off.
Eventing vest - do you already have one? If yes, then put this off. If no, then how bad do you need it? If you don't actually need it, then put this off.
Tall boots - zipper broke? That means they're no longer really functional. This is what you need the most.

I vote tall boots.

I'd try to fix the zipper tbh, there are probably ways to do it. Even used ones are pretty darn expensive. You could try to fix it, and if you're getting new ones anyhow you don't have much to lose. You could use the old ones for hacking out.
AnitaAnne and boots like this.

I mean, the zipper isn’t like broken beyond use (in fact, I’m wearing them around my house right now haha) but it splits up from the middle when I have my breeches on. When I have a thinner material pant on it doesn’t seem to be a problem. And they seem to break only when I’m in a crunch for time. They broke going over a jump the other day, it wasn’t bad but there is a breeze on my leg when they do break haha. So maybe I’ll try to stretch them out a little bit instead.

To me there is nothing more important than protecting your brain...
No-brainer to me is buy a new helmet.
Don't buy for any other reason than it needs a upgrade but don't feel you have to "upgrade" to more expensive...
You upgrade or change if the fit is no longer comfortable or right...
All helmets go through the same testing and must pass those tests to be certified.
If you aren't into the "fad" and flavor of the month you don't need to spend many hundreds to find good fit and protection.
So, go for tha tnew helmet and if you spend realistically you will have $$$ left over to put toward some of those other wanted items...

Those boots,....
Find a good tack shop, shoe repair or cobblers shop and see what they say about replacing the zipper...
Now that is assuming they are leather as that can be stitched several times, not sure synthetic boot material can.
Doesn't hurt to get a appraisal for the work to be done...
...
jmo...

I'd buy the helmet & the boots first. I personally HATE boots with zippers, they always broke whenever I had them. I'd get some without zippers if I were you.

The zipper can probably be replaced or fixed though, if you want to save money.

Helmets need to be replaced for one of several reasons:

1) Out of date (yes, helmets do expire and do not last forever)
2) No longer fit
3) have suffered an impact (fall)
4) not appropriate for showing

Boots with zippers IMO are a pain. A shoe repair shop could replace with a sturdier zipper to make them last longer. A zipper that breaks open, IMO is also a safety issue.

Safety comes first before fashion.

Funny thing...I just got a pair of tall boots for free. Someone was going to throw them away and I got them. They were exactly my size. There's laces on the front and a zipper on the back. They're not real leather. Well, they had been left outside in the weather for a while and the zippers are completely ruined. Other than that they're fine. I'm going to take them to the boot repair place and get the zippers replaced because hey, it'll be cheaper than buying new ones.

How old is your helmet? If it's more than a few years old, or if you've ever had a fall with it, get that.

See about having the boot zipper replaced.

Then stock your money away until you NEED something. Horses seem to know when to get hurt or break some tack or otherwise mess things up requiring money expenditures right after you just spent money on something else.

Not if you buy them a bag of cookies too

@Maddiehorse10 I would go for the boots or the helmet.
