Years ago when I was working patrol I got a call one night about a guy hanging out at a local convenient store who was creeping out the cashiers, so I go down there and find this somewhat attractive man sitting in this very nice sports car in the parking lot. I proceed to ask him his business and he tells me he is waiting to meet someone whom he met online however she will now not answer his phone calls. I ask him to please come to the station and I will see what I can do( really just wanting to get him away from the store and find out exactly what was going on) It ended up he showed me several pictures of this woman a drop dead gorgeous blonde and he told me her name at that point a lightbulb lit up I knew who this person was and believe me she looked nothing like the pics she had sent him. She was grossly overweight, a real slob, unemployed and had a history or meeting guys online getting them to send her money, gifts or whatever..she told him she had never been married and didn't have children yet she had and she had 3 children. Needless to say I was left with the daunting task of telling this young man who had driven some 1500 miles that his internet princess was a fake and he was not her first victim. He left a very heartbroken young man, I almost felt sorry for him yet at the same time I felt in a way he had it coming to him because he had thrown caution to the wind and gave up what he described as a really good job etc to drive all the way to Oklahoma to marry a girl who was a complete fraud. Fortunately he did decide to go back home and called my PD the next day to tell me "thank you"
This in my opinion is a best case scenario, the roles are reversed but it happens with both men and women being the seducer and one falling prey to their tactics. I as well have tried to educate people on the dangers because they are all to real.
So I hope this also gets the attention of anyone who is thinking about doing an internet dating site it just isn't worth the risks

I'm curious to know to!

I don't disagree with internet dating sites, I used to use them to find people to chat to online when I had bad insomnia - I never met anyone through them tho', I think nowadays they are used by people to pull stunts on unsuspecting lovelorn people ...

And as someone else said earlier on in the thread you don't have to meet someone online for it to be a disaster, I know several women who were married to or in a relationship with a guy who was a nightmare, and none of them met these men online!

"Did I not just use the word 'puzzling'?"

I'm on farmersonly.com and have had great experiences. Then again they're pretty strict with the type of people who are on it. Many men share my love of animals and I can't find that in a bar or out and about... so I think online dating is great! Heck I joined the site b/c my friend met a guy on there and be brought her 40 bales of hay for their first date instead of flowers! How cool is that? They're getting married next month...

However if someone contacted me from another country saying they were broke and needed me to come to them.. I'd worry. I really hope the OP's family member is ok. I know that being lonely can push you to do things you might not normally do...

Online dating is fine if you go into it with clear mind and use common sense. I'm having a blast with it!!!
