Just can't win

I was so proud of myself this spring when I found a saddle for J at a used tack sale for $30. When I looked it over, it was missing 1 billet strap, but the other 2 looked fine.

Had the saddle fitter take a look at hubby's Crosby & J's for fit. Found out hubby's had a broken tree, and J's had a cracked tree, but would be fine for what she was doing and the amount of time she'd be using it.

So it's now a month before fair, I have $0 budget left for anything other than the ER vet fund, and guess what breaks this weekend?? Yep, the other 2 billets. WHEN J WAS RIDING!!!

So much for my awesome shopping prowess

A good friend has a saddle she can use for the rest of the year thankfully, but she isn't very comfortable in it, so this will be interesting for sure. And to top it off, I messed up on J's showmanship jacket that I'm making, so that a cluster right now too

I don't want to play anymore.

You won, honey. Nobody was hurt and you gained valuable knowledge.

By and large, we get what we pay for, unless we are VERY experienced in what to look for.

I'm certainly glad no one was hurt.

*hugs*

That was the frustrating part, lol. I KNEW what I was looking at, that's why I was so hyped up about the deal. I admit, I missed the cracked tree, but everything else I checked out and was good. Where the original billet broke was at a the last hole for the girth (which can happen at even the best of saddles) and the attachment point of the billets was sound. It broke past that, where you can't see, so no one would've caught it.

Obviously, I'm ecstatic that J wasn't hurt, & was actually quite impressed at how well she handled the situation. But when it rains, it pours

my thoughts exactly. you got lucky that you didn't' get killed or seriously hurt when the remaining billet straps broke.
wonder how much it would cost to have a leather worker put on some new billets?

I didn't mean to sound heartless. I do hope that the "rain" is over and you get some clear skies.

She's going to save up for a new saddle over the winter. And I'm just going to junk her old one. Hubby won't get rid of his, so it's going to sit in the attic I guess.

I completely understand what you are saying, and didn't intend to come across as if I could care less about J.

That, of course, is not at all what we are saying. I just always look for the positive, the silver lining .. the thing to be thankful for. I'm just thankful no one was hurt..

She ALWAYS does

Sorry you're so frustrated. I know how it is when it's not just the one thing...it's when all those little things pile up! I hope things get straightened out for you quickly.
