Looking for bedding suggestions
I am exploring bedding options for this coming winter, and hoping to find something before it starts raining, even though that's hopefully some time away!
Last year I used regular shavings and bedding pellets. The problem was the wood dust. Even though the shavings were triple screened and have reduced dust I was still suffering every day leaving the barn with a bloody nose. I had to stop using the shavings and went just to the pellets, but even then they turned to a fine powder and caused problems, but it was less.
The barn won't let me bed with straw, and I'd prefer something more absorbent as I only bed in the winter while it's really wet out so that the horse can have a place to dry off. My horse loves laying outside in the sand when it's dry, but when it's wet he just needs somewhere to stand for his feet to dry out or to sleep inside where it's dry. He mainly needs something dry to stand on for his hooves. He will still go poop and pee outside. They will not remove any of the bedding from the stall, even if it's wet... Usually I remove the wet bedding and just place it on his poop and pee pile and replace it with dry bedding.
I have used rice hulls in the past and I liked how they worked, but they aren't so absorbent, and I'm not sure where to source them where I am at. If they are the best option for me at this point then I may just have to make the drive and fill up a car load. Maybe in combination with some bedding pellets would work.
I just can't really do the shavings anymore as it is extremely painful and made me totally sick. I did try several brands of shavings, it's just the shavings, not the brand.
I was wondering if there's any other options I'm missing, or if there are any recommendations.
