looking for new trainer - central mississppi

so .. i am looking for a new trainer for me and my daughter.

our old trainer has grown inconsistant, and we rarely see her more than once a month even though i still see her advertising her services on craigslist.

even before now, things were not going as well as i thought they should, often when my wife would take DD to lessons, the trainers daughter would occassionally handle lessons, and spend most of the time either chatting with my wife or texting on the phone ... not what i would call ideal.

so .. anyone know any trainers 30-45 minutes south of Jackson Mississippi?

I haven't had one flake out but I do know of one that did flake out on a friend. I was so glad I didn't go there with my son. This friend had raved about her so I went to check the place out but didn't care for what I saw. Now the friend's with my trainer. Hope you find a good one that works out for you.

Do you have a feed store in your area? If you do you should stop by and look if they have a space that people advertise services. Also talk to the owner or employees see If they have any recommendations.

i like this -- hadn't thought of that -- there is a feed store about 20 miles south of us -- but most everyone goes to tractor supply in my town -- i could ask there

Specifically what type of training?

If it's the basics of learning to ride, that will work for now, I would call the local 4-H Clubs. You may not have an equine 4-H club close by but, I'll bet there's someone closer than 60 - 90 minutes to teach you the basics:)

Call someone on this link and ask them for the names of the equine 4-H clubs in your area.

Matter-of-fact, it is not uncommon for children without a horse to join a horse 4-H group. If the club is worth its salt, the child can learn a lot more than just riding:) Of course that part won't work for you but, it might be the best only place to at least get your daughter going:)

-- basic western riding

-- current trainer runs a local equine 4-H club, the problem is that lessons are inconsistent and sometimes she hands the lessons over to her daughter, who really does not pay attention when instructing my daughter

I was going to ad that our Tractor Supply stores have a bulletin board in the back by the restrooms for ads and business cards. Maybe talking with her will straighten things out and get every one back on schedule. I may just call that number to see what is what in our area.

Well phooey - where's that bang my head on the desk emoticon:-(

started discussing issues with current trainer
we are going to try to get on a regular schedule now that show season is over with
I hope it all works out but I think I would continue to look for someone else. Oftentimes these types of situations only right themselves temporarily:-(

It is even possible that a junior/senior level 4-H student might be more capable of teaching you the basics (and more dependable because they need the money).

My good friends daughter was 15 when she was instructing the neighbor's 12 year old on basic riding. Laurie was really good - anally good - too good - she expected perfection and when she didn't get it or the 12 year old was goofing off on the horse, she would inform the young rider in training she was not sitting up straight enough and had to stick the broom handle in the back of her jeans:shock:

It was funny because we were all friends and that was the only "beating up" of the 12 year old my friends 15 year old ever did --- ah - you messed up, time to wear the broom handle:lol::lol:

Talked with the trainer.
We are going to get one last lesson at my house this Sunday evening. (because she will just happen to be in my area bringing cupcakes to her neice)

Then we are going to do lessons every other Saturday evening at her house with her horses. We talked about goals so that we can start making progress towards those goals. I have decided that if she tries to pawn us off to her daughter for a lesson, that will be our last lesson. If she keeps us walking all the time and holds us back when we are ready to move forward, we will leave.

In the mean time, on our off-weeks i will be looking at another trainer nearby and trying him out on our in-between weeks.
