The USTA ran an article in hoof beats, a few years ago, about standardbreds that go to slaughter. They went to an auction and watched all these thoroughbreds and quarter horses and whatever else get run through the ring. The auction closed and not a single standardbred had run through the auction, even though there was a pen full of them in the back. The writer watched as all the new owners fought with these new horses to get them into the trailer. Meanwhile, the truck bound for slaughter pulled up and all the standardbreds just walked onto the trailer like it was any old day at the races. I don't remember the name of the article but if you get in touch with someone at hoofbeats they might be able to help you.
