There is a really good book called Horse Keeping on Small Acreage. I recommend you get a copy, that will answer a bunch of your questions.

Next step is, when you dad does let you get a horse, learn to bite your tongue when you really do not want to go out and do your chores and just go out and do them anyway. Rainstorm, horses still need to be fed and watered. Blizzard, horses still need to be fed and watered. You have the flu, horses still need to be fed and watered.

You do not want to make your horse something that causes them a hassle.
