I'm sorry that I didn't read that he was 19yo.
We bought a 19yo TWH who was a joy to trail ride. UNfortunately, anything else that we tried to train him to do was not so great. He got pretty used to gunfire, he would do a running walk backwards when marching next to the band, sometimes a football field's length bc he tried, but he was afraid of the band. Never bucked, never reared, never bolted. Really sweet guy.
We loved to ride and handle him bc that was WHAT HE KNEW.
Old animals aren't good candidates for retraining. Many people RETIRE their horses at 19yo. Unfortunately he passed away at 24yo of Cushings. We really miss him.
OP, I would find another horse to train.
