My horse will not canter in the school

My horse, Freddie cannot pick up canter in the school. I have had him checked, legs back and the all his tack. He is brilliant in canter on grass or in a field, but struggles in the arena. Please help me find the problem!!!!! 🙏🙏

Does he pick up the canter in an outdoor? The horse (or more likely you) may be less tense without the walls and thus more relaxed and able to pick up the canter.

What size is the arena? Cantering, for a horse, is a balancing act and for some it's a struggle to handle the corners/turns that come up fast in smaller arenas.

You may just have to boost him harder, use of spurs or a crop. A well trained horse should be able to pick up a canter on the lead you ask for on the first stride. I think letting them trot just teaches them to trot more and faster and not canter.
