My mare urinated on another mare?

Hey guys!

So I gave Razz her grain while she was out in her paddock with the other horses. I stayed with her and kept the other horses away from her. One of the other mares came up behind her and Razz peed on her...? She only peed while the horse was there. It's my first time owning a mare, so I don't know if it's a mare thing...It was just weird lol Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know for sure but it sounds like maybe your mare is in heat and was "squirting." Not really urinating on the other mare. One of the signs are mare is in heat is this squirting behavior. Hope this helps explain a little.

Yes, it is most likely your mare being in season, and it is not unusual for mares to display this mating behavior to other mares (and geldings, too). Some never do, some do it a lot. In my experience, it happens more often with low pecking order mares doing this to more dominant/boss mares.

On the seventh day, he Painted the good ones.

I think that's what it was. I started to think that's what it was last night after I made my post.

So a horse that's lower in the pecking order seems to do it more? Cause my mare is lower in the pecking order. [email protected]

LOL! One of my mares was in heat the other day and my gelding (who was a stallion until he was 7) decided to get up in her business. She squirted right on his head. I rolled in the floor laughing at the look on his face.

That's been my experience. I've never seen our two top mares do it.
