While geldings are capable of such dispicable behavior, it happens less frequent and is why my motto for owning geldings is:
"blessed are the geldings for they are always even tempered".
Agree being "stabled"'together doesn't mean the mares know each other, unless they are in the same turnout.
I hope the rider who was hurt is still doing ok.
I've tried to type the "what would I have done" part several times --- none of it was PG worthy, even without the cuss words --------- once again I will say, I am not a breeder, I neither need nor want some fool mare that has her ill-mannered fat hind end in an 1,100 pound snit over nothing out on a trail ride--------------
