Just to add, there is nothing wrong with having a "scopey" horse, I've seen 3'6 jumpers scope much higher then the jump. Just shows the potiential the animal has. Maybe he just really enjoys jumping! Ponies that have that "scope" are the "perfect children hunter"!

But if he is doing it at trot poles then you need to practise poles, like posted above half halts, sit the trot over them.

Ditto on overjumping being common with green horses. My horse has only been jumping a few months and does this (see my avatar ) I don't think you'll be able to correct that in 3 days; I'd focus more on making sure the horse is relaxed and responsive going into the jumps. If you have time to do schooling over poles it sounds like the horse could use a lot of that, too.

A horse that over jumps tends to take off earlier. You control the take off spot - however this might be a bit too advanced right now.

It's a school team, talk to your instructor. In the 3 day time frame and riding time you have, there is little you can do. So go with it, or talk to your instructor.

OP it doesn't sound to me like you're supposed to fix your horses issues, just get used to it's way of going so you can successfully ride courses together, so I wouldn't worry too much about the over jumping this go around, so long as the horse is a safe ride. There really isn't very much a kid can do in three days, so prepare yourself and the horse for the competition as best you can and have fun!
