I have two horses. My ten year old mare and my old boss mare.
I bought a third horse as a project and my ten yr old terrorized her. Chased her all over the property. I ended up selling the third horse, as they didn't get along.
Today I picked up a new gelding. The ten yr old was very excited, prancing up and down the fence line, but also showing aggression, charging the fence with ears back. Finally she went away from the new horse and paced the fence nearest my old mares paddock.
I ended up putting the ten yr old in the paddock with the old mare. The ten year old immediately put herself in between my old mare and the new horse, while making threatening faces at the new horse. I just checked on them and she is still guarding my old mare.
Do you think she is trying to protect my old horse, or just being possessive?
