There is no such thing as a free horse.

Honestly, I'm just so torn. He looks like a sweetie who just needs a little extra love, but can I really afford him? I mean, what if my assumed $1000 a month isn't enough? He's been on CL a while, so it's not as if it would be easy to find him a home again. Gahh!!!!

I'm thinking I should give myself a week and if he's still listed, consider again? I would hate to contact this person and then back out within the first few minutes. Or maybe I should contact them and see what they have to say? I don't know! Lol

Just wanted to post an update. After much thought and agonizing, I decided to follow the majority of opinion on this guy. As much as I would love to help him out, I felt that it was probably in my best interest to listen to people who know more than I do in the area of horses. It breaks my heart, but after thinking about it more, I know you guys are probably right. Hopefully someone else can take this particular horse on.

So, I wanted to thank everyone for their opinions. Virtual cookies for everyone!

You did right.

When you think about taking on a horse like you had shown to us? You really and truly do not know what is going on with horse. And getting a GOOD equine vet's opinion can run into some money too.

Most horses, knock on wood, are little major expense after the buying of them, that is only board/feed and normal expenses monthly.

But if one gets sick? Then you are in major money. And a chronic illness, or one that will not resolve itself with some time? Major money.

Also, if you are going to have to board a horse with issues? You need to keep in mind that unless you are paying for separate pasture? You will have to put horse in with others that may beat your horse up, because he can't get away from them easily.

And even if you do pay for separate pasture, you can end up with BO deciding to put another horse in there anyway.

Horses make me a better person.

I didn't think about the possibility of other horses being in the same area, to be honest. Ideally, I would have my horse alone in a stall with a run or similar, but as you point out, I can't expect to board in a pasture and not have the BO decide to rent out the space to other horses as well.

Very good point. Thank you. :)
