Rant about winter training

We are having one of the worst winters here in years. We were in an official 'state of emergency' for a week the end of January. Heavy snowfall, crippling cold and blistering winds.

This winter too is especially frustrating. Last year when I had a couple young projects I boarded at a place with an indoor, and all the years before that the winters either weren't that bad and all I had was good broke older horses I could afford to pull out of the field once a month when we got a couple good days.

This h*ll of a winter I'm back home in the middle of the windiest township in the province with no indoor facilities besides a small stable, two unbroke youngsters and an older mare who's going stir crazy from lack of exercise.

We had a really nice week there last week and I was out every day and got the little ones going good, but the weather's turned again and doesn't look like it'll be anything good for a while. I was really hoping to get the little ones started before I move out west in the spring/summer, but this winter is making it impossible.

How do you guys do it? I am beyond sick and tired and ready for spring.

One day at a time. Get what you can done and hold faith knowing that this will only last a few more weeks. You are going crazy, your horses are going crazy, this weather is going crazy. There isn't anything you can do but make sure they are snug and healthy and ready for a break in the weather. A few weeks of minimal work is okay. If it is not... Well, too bad.

Hang tough girlie!

I'm in Ont as well and finding this one of the worst winters we've had for years. Last year we were able to ride a lot but not this year. I tried to go out for a ride the other day and my poor mare was slugging thru the snow, it had a crust on it and she would climb up then break thru, hard work for her so we didn't go far I can tell you. Just gave up and headed back to the barn. Extra cold these days too. Tired of frozen buckets and cleaning stalls with frozen manure.

Anything -15C and colder, I don't ride, train, nothing! I don't have indoor arena, so being outside for any length of time has me frozen.

I am not here to promote anythingNo, that's not true, I am here to promote everything equestrian and everyone enjoying horses!

Our winters are notoriously brutal, so a hiatus from riding or training for a few months is not unusual. You just have to do what you can, when you can and not expect too much. The horses will be fine. Try to focus on things you can control and enjoy an opportunity to read, reflect and plan. Once spring comes and the daylight hours get long you know you will have a good 5-6 months of riding and training.

How far west are you moving?

I'm in Manitoba and I know exactly what you are saying......it's been one cold/windy/long winter so far! Even on the odd nice days we have had, it's been too slippery out to even ride and I don't want to chase a horse falling and breaking a leg or something........so I wait for spring :(

i board at an all outdoor facility, so no indoor arena at all. our barn is just a little two stall, and all it can really be used for is grooming in the itty bitty aisle in bad weather or housing a sick horse when need be. we even have an outhouse for a bathroom, and let me tell you, when it's -20 that seat is cold!!!

i've barely been able to ride this winter. when it isn't freezing cold it's icier than heck. so either the footing is good and we freeze our butts off, or the weather is great for riding but we can't due to ice everywhere.

but i had a dream last night that my arena was defrosted, free of snow and ice. that means spring is coming! to heck with what any groundhog says, lol.
