Shared Belief, champion 2-year old of 2013 and probably one of, if not the most talented horse in training, died earlier today due to colic. He was four and getting ready for his comeback after a fractured hip earlier this year. Shared Belief's only two losses came from the highly controversial 2014 Breeder's Cup Classic, and the Charles Town Classic where he was pulled up because of the fracture.
This horse DID NOT break down, he died of colic. He was in his stall when symptoms arose. Shared Belief had phenomenal connections who loved him to pieces.
I saw this last night and was saddened. What a horse. To win 10 out of 12 races- half of which Grade 1- is really something. I was watching the Charles Town Classic when he made an awkward bump leaving the gate. ( could have happened to any horse in any setting, be it a stall, fence gate, trailer, etc) and received a very small hairline fracture to his hip. Mike Smith knew something was off, and stopped him immediately. Did not go any further to be sure. This horse was given a lot of time and care. He was just now being brought back to training. ( it happened in April)
As EliRose mentioned, this was colic. He was rushed to UC Davis vet center for surgery at the first sign of trouble. The vets were unable to save him. He was given the best of everything every step of the way in his life. He was loved and admired by fans because he always gave his best.
There is a video on YouTube from TVG titled Remembering Shared Belief for those interested. Have it saved but haven't seen it yet. But sure it is well done.
