The weather has been strange here for the last two days. Before that horribly hot. Night before last we had a nasty sand storm. I had put everyone up in the barn as they have no way of getting out of the wind in my turnout which doubles as my arena. After the sand storm passed the air got still and the temp dropped a good 15*.
I decided to catch my horse and ride him. He was feeling good and I have been taught to use a horse behavior to your advantage. So we worked on speed control, even excited he did great.
Then I have been fussing with lead changes and had the nagging feeling that I have been "binding him up". So I used his forward movement, stayed out of his way, made a slight lift with my rein and a switch of leg and BAM! Super smooth changes in both directions.(as usual I over complicated)
It doesn't seem like a big deal when typing it out and the solutions sound pretty obvious but when it all goes right, boy does it feel good.
I DON'T LEAD 'EM AND FEED 'EM, I RIDE 'EM AND SLIDE 'EM.
