Should I wear breeches...

... Even if I'm not riding? Me and my mom are visiting my future lesson barn, just for a quick tour to see how they run things. I want to wear my tall boots to... um, avoid the "landmines" (if you catch my drift...), but I'm not sure if I should wear my breeches or just regular jeans with them. I want to seem like a serious rider. Do you think breeches would be appropriate, or should I just ditch them and wear my jeans?

No sense wearing your breeches if you're not riding. Same goes for your tall boots. Ankle high boots will work just as well.

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!

Agreed. I've always found it a little silly when I see people wearing breeches when they haven't been riding/don't intend to ride on that occasion. I don't think that it would make you look any more serious than if you were wearing jeans and paddock boots. That said, there's no problem with you wearing breeches/tall boots if you want to! I just don't think it's necessary, or that you'll be taken more seriously because of it.

Oh, and one can easily avoid landmines by looking before you step!

There is no need to wear breeches and tall boots if you are not riding, save the wear & tear on these expensive items. Wear regular clothes and footwear that you don't mind getting dirty.

Don't bother. Around horses when things are casual, nobody cares what you wear!
Its only at the shows that people (aka judges) care!

You might have to have an awkward conversation about how you're there to just tour, not ride, as whoever owns the place might assume you assumed that day was a riding day by the way you were dressed. I'd just wear regular barn clothes.

Showing up in breeches and tall boots for a barn tour won't make anyone take you more seriously. What makes people take you seriously is how hard you work during those lessons, showing up on time, neatly dressed and your horse correctly tacked.

when i'm going to check out a barn i'm usually in my breeches and paddock boots, but that is because i'm stopping in at that barn on either my way to or from where i do currently ride.

i find some barns and their staff around here are more amicable and talkative with somebody visiting/stopping by when that person 'looks the part', but it really doesn't matter in the long run, as what you say and how you act is the true measure of yourself, not the clothes you wear.

when i went out for the test ride on my new lease horse last week, i was wearing jeans, paddock boots, and the same 'office-y' shirt/blouse i wore to work that day. yet when i ride i usually wear breeches. didn't matter a bit to the horse's owner what i was wearing, he was looking at how i rode and how i interacted with his horse and himself.

A lot of the "serious" riders at my barn wear jeans with their half chaps(or tall boots) As long as they are close fitted(skinny jeans/jeggings) they should look fine. I usually wear jeans for my afterschool lessons, and breeches on the weekends.

Also, theres really no point in wearing horse gear when you aren't planning on riding.
