So You Think You Can Handle Horses? Well, Watch This!

I came across this video and I thought it was pretty neat. Thought I might share it with all of you. These are Argentina gauchos performing an equine herd demonstration.

Sorry, I don't know how to insert the actual video on to this post.

Edit: Fixed Code

I used to guide pack trips in the Colorado mountains. We would determine the "alpha" mare and put a bell on her. The other horses would respond to HER and not wander far from her when posted out to graze. This is commonly called the "bell mare". I suspect that is what is going on in this video. The one horse being led has a bell on. Bet it is a mare.

The other horses respected this mare as the leader and would stick with her.

I was wondering the same thing. Every pack of horse had a ring leader that the horses seemed to follow. Neat idea to someone who doesn't understand horses.

I totally agree Allison. The man that I worked for as a teenager did the same. We used a "bell mare" in the mountains. Picket the bell mare, and you could turn the mules and horses loose in a meadow.

Have to say doing that in a packed arena that is pretty impressive!
If I ever went out of country to strictly cowboy my first choice has always been Argentina. They are amazing for their stockmanship. They also are the finest when it comes to rawhide braiding, beautiful work.

I DON'T LEAD 'EM AND FEED 'EM, I RIDE 'EM AND SLIDE 'EM.

That's pretty incredible. I understand the herd dynamics behind it, but it is still pretty impressive to me that they are so careful to stay with their groups. Pretty cool!
