Frankly, looks like another ridiculous example of someone using some photos and screaming abuse.
I recently (Nov-Jan) paid a trainer to do some of that stuff with my spooky 11 year old mare. For her own good, as well as mine, she needed to learn how to handle 'scary' things - and it is much harder to teach at 11 years! Someone would have done her a huge favor by doing those things when she was young.
As for backing...no, I would not do it. However, if it was just for a brief time, it probably didn't do much harm. When I was a kid, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, we would carry each other sometimes while playing. Of course, that may be why I ended up 5'8" instead of an All-Star in the NBA...not! If a 5-6 year old can carry someone his own weight around the playground without damaging his growth plates and other stuff, then a short time on the back of a small horse probably isn't all that harmful. I wouldn't do it myself, but that doesn't mean it is abusive.
Accusations of abuse, spread on the Internet, can mess up someone's life. Folks ought to keep their mouths shut and their fingers away from the keyboard unless the abuse meets the legal standard - and then they should report it to someone who can do something about it.
Riders ask "How?" Horsemen ask "Why?"
