I prefer for my horses to be out 24/7. My barn manager allows the field boarded horses to come inside and eat in a stall so she can physically handle each horse and make sure there are no injuries, missing shoes, etc.

My horses are freshly off track Thoroughbreds. I feel after being in a stall almost 24/7 only out of their stall to be worked, they should be able to be a horse, enjoy being part of a herd and get exercise.

Humans lived in caves, dogs lived in dens, but horses are grassland animals. Shelter does not mean the same thing to them that it does to us.

But nevermind that… there are lots of practical reasons to keep your horses outside:

1. Less cost
2. Less labor (no bedding to deal with)
3. Less risk of fire
4. Better for the horses' lungs

It's really a no-brainer. The only reason I would ever put horses in an enclosed building is if theft and vandalism were big problems in the area. Even then you don't need stalls – you can have a loafing shed.

haha OP, I like how you wrote this :)

My horses are on turnout 24/7, and I like it that way. I think they are happier because of it and I KNOW they're healthier because of it.

However, I do wish I had a stall for sick or injured horses. My mare will (if all goes as planned) be foaling next year and I am going to build a stall for that purpose.

I think stalls serve their purpose but I would NEVER have my horse live in one.
