Trailer Ties?

Hi everyone. How important is it to tie your horse in the trailer? Will it hurt your horse if you didn't and got into an accident or something happened? How much slack should be in the tie when it's hooked up to the horse?

I normally tie my horses up when I trailer in my straight load. But I've noticed that my horse will somehow manage to get her head in the other side and there's a bar separating the two sides and a bar that goes up to the ceiling of the trailer. She can't get her head over when she does this so I normally just unhook her to make sure she doesn't get herself caught up more.

I have a friend who really never ties their horses up in the trailer. Mainly because of accident reasons, if they need to get the horse's out they don't need to fuss with their ties, etc.

For the wretched of the earth there is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.

We tie ours from the outside for that reason, or don't tie at all. But as a wrecker operator I can tell you, no matter what you're prepared for, stuff happens.

People often tie because they don't want the horse to get their head down behind the bar, or put their head somewhere and get stuck and panic.

If you get in an accident I think tying isn't going to help at all.
