Transporting a Horse?

I'm taking my horse to college with me in the fall, but I don't own a trailer or anyway of transporting it on my own. I've asked people I know with no luck so far.

I need to transport my horse from Louisville, Kentucky to West Lafayette, Indiana in early August (About 180 miles).

Is there anyone out there with experience in transporting horses that knows of an equine shipping company that has good rates for short distances? Or better yet is anyone going that way themselves?

I have shipped with Brookledge, but they can be sort of pricey depending on how full their loads are. There are quite a few other companies but I feel they are all priced pretty similarly. It was a little over a thousand to ship my horse from Lexington to South Florida one way. There is a Facebook group called "Hitch My Horse a Ride" where people will post looking for rides for their horses along with people that have trailers going to different places. Maybe check on there. The good thing is that is not a far trip and shouldn't be terribly expensive if you do book with a shipping company.

Thanks for the info. I already requested a quote from Brook Ledge and they said they wouldn't be able to do it. They didn't give a reason though, so I'm not sure if it's because the distance was too short or if they were already full or what. There was one company I looked at that said they only transport long distance.

I'll look into the Facebook group though, thank you so much!

Try going onto Uship.com. You just put in what you're wanting to transport (a horse) and it asks for some info about it. Then put in starting point and destination. Next thing you know transporters start making offers/try to outbid each other on giving you the best price/option.

I had a foal hauled from South Dakota to Virginia for about $650.

We have used Thoroughbred Transport a couple of times when we had to haul my horse across the state when I was in undergrad. They are based out of Bossier City, Louisiana, but if I am not mistaken they also travel around the country. I think the cost was in the $200 range for about 250 miles. They did a great job with my horse, so I would definitely say it's worth a call to see! They may be able to recommend someone if not themselves. Their website: Thoroughbred Transport, Inc.
