Update on Cody (mini mare)

Then vet came today. My normal farm vet wouldn't do teeth on a mini so I ended up having to call a horse vet from another town. He can out & we attempted to look at Cody's teeth. She started rearing up & striking out as soon as he tried to look. After she knocked me on my rear end, he snubbed her up tight & still had to pin her against the stall wall just to look at her teeth. He said she is only about 15 BUT her teeth are in horrible shape. He had me let her loose so he could watch the way she walked. He said her fetlocks & pasterns are severly damaged from the hoofs not being cared for in the past. He look at me & said "I will not waste you money, put her down or get rid of her. With her health problems & her attitude, she's not worth it". Now I have to figure out what to do

Not that I'm in any place to question a vet, but how does he know that they are severely damaged? Does she limp or act very stiff? Are her joints swollen? They didn't look swollen to me in the pictures you had of her, but I could be wrong. Are her fetlocks dropped? If someone just wants her as a pet or a play buddy (going for walks, maybe a small obstacle course occasionally or something), I wouldn't think that it would be a huge deal unless she had severe artheritis or other significant pain. She likely reared and struck out when he tried to look at her teeth because no one has worked with her before. Sour used to do the exact same thing if you even tried to touch her body from her neck, down! You can't judge an animal's personality if you haven't taught it to respect humans or trust them, IMO.

Its ultimately up to you, obviously, but I'm sorry to hear that he thinks she ought to put her down. It definitely puts you in a hard position.

He didn't say what the exact problems, he just said that the fetlocks & pasturns were ruined & he was suprised that she was willing to move that much on her own. He wouldn't even vacinate her. I have been trying to gain her trust since I got her. after the farrier visit & now again today, we're back to square one. I needed to take her halter off after the vet left & she just about tried to jump the bottom half of the stall door to get away from me .

I sure know how you feel...we're having the exact same problems with Kenzie, our foster filly right now. She has a nasty injury to her ear that requires me to clean it often, and every time I do that, any trust she was in me goes 'poof' before my eyes, literally. I've just sort of decided that we'll get her healthy first, and worry about friendship later. Its hard though when they're terrified out you, you know it, and theres nothing you can do about it :/ I'll be thinking of you guys!
