My neighbor was letting me graze the horses on his property and in return I was fixing up the place. I fixed fences, filled in over 40 holes on his property, put new fencing up by the gate, and spent 5 hours removing weeds. I spent $60 on fill dirt and fencing materials. I was there for an hour last night fixing up the fencing, as he still had one section that was loose.
Last week his deer feeder was stolen. Probably by large men, as they had to be able to carry a large deer feeder with 50lbs worth of feed in it and lift it over the fence. We had discussed it and he told me he didn't feel comfortable having the horses out at night. Okay, no problem.
Today he changed the locks on the gate and left my things (buckets and electric fence charger and fencing) in a pile by the front gate (where anyone could steal them). No note, no explanation. I guess he blames me for the deer feeder.
I've only used the pasture for maybe 4 weeks and not even every day. I guess this is what happens when you don't have a contract. If it wasn't for me he wouldn't even have a fence by the front gate! I'm tempted to go back over and take my fence boards back. He had a gate, but no fencing on either side of it.
Why would I spend all this time and effort fixing up his property, and get nothing for it?
I'm guessing he thinks my horses broke his deer feeder, and I carried it off, which is insane, as that deer feeder weighs more than I do. And if my horses had gotten into 50lbs of deer feed, they would have been really sick! I never let the horses in that area!
Why couldn't he have come and talked to me?
If he had asked, I might have even given him some money towards a new feeder. Or mowed his lawn, or picked up the millions of tree limbs he cut down and never got around to picking up... or whatever other odd job he needed done.
Now my horses will have no turnout this winter. None of my other neighbors have pasture.
With Harmony having heaves, it was so important to have pasture for her.
To top things off, I got home tonight and my old mare is very very lame in her front end. No swelling or anything, so I have no idea what is wrong. I hope it is just an abscess, but I couldn't find a tender spot. She won't let me pick up her right front at all, and is very sore on her left.
