I don't actually worry or care what they think, and in a way I see where they're coming from, like taking years and years of swimming lessons when you already know how to swim. I guess thats a point that most of them think the horse does all the work and you just sit there. But after my lesson today nothing could be further from the truth, it was a MAJOR workout and I'm exhausted. I'll be sore tomorrow, I can tell!

When I was taking riding lessons, if people would pose the same question noted by the OP, I would just say that I enjoyed my lessons... Simple/Done.

Then ask them how well they can get their brother/sister/SO to do what they want when they want and then ask how they think it would go if they weighed a 1000lbs more...

Too much explaining and arguing involved in that tack. Much simpler to leave any sports analogies out of it and stick with the acquisition of knowledge and experience.

Also, as an aside, the only reason football isn't in the Olympics is that it isn't an internationally-played sport, just like cricket and rugby aren't internationally-played sports, so they aren't in the Olympics, either.

I constantly get the old "Oh I thought you knew how to ride"!. I do, but have you heard of anyone going to the Olympics without a coach for any sport?
