Zeus is 10, and I plan to have him around for another 20 or so years, so he better be up for that!
Lacy has had an amazing 2 years with you and I'm sure she'll have another 10 more!
Don't worry, just enjoy every moment with your wonderful horse.

I give myself very good advice, But I very seldom follow it

You know, older horses are really the best. As everyone else posted, you should have her for a lot longer yet. Keep her healthy and active, feed her well and keep up to date on her health, and she'll do great for you.

She's a really pretty girl by the way. Always love seeing pictures of her. You guys look like you really have a good bond.

Pretty much! I'm sure it's this way for anyone with a horse but sometimes I worry that I might go out in the morning and find her laying there, dead. That just scares me. I've had other pets die and I feel terrible and broken with each one, whether it's a fish or a dog and I just can't imagine being able to move on past Lacey's death. It's kinda like my life was in black and white before Lacey and now that she's here, my life is in color and I really can't comprehend going back to life in black and white. I was talking to my "special guy friend" (hahahaha) the other day and he asked me how long I have had Lacey and when I told him that I've only been with her for a year and a half, he was totally shocked. He said "You talk about her like you've known her for your entire life!" I really feel like I've known her for the entire time that my life has been worth something, yknow? I know it was worth something before Lacey came along but I feel like she's made me so much more of a person....

We totally do need a group. Good idea. Heehee

She does lose weight in the winter. =( I think that has more to do with how she's in a feild with 6 other, much younger (the oldest one is 13) horses and she's second from the bottom in the pecking order and less to do with age, however. She's always getting shoved off her food and I try to feed her extra when I come out but she doesn't have as nice of a layer of fat over her ribs as I would like to see. Thankfully she's maintaining perfectly, even while looking a smidge ribby so maybe she's fine. And her butt looks all nice, not gaunt at all, so maybe it's just her conformation to carry her weight less over her ribs...
That's true about Arabs and their life spans! I'll try to remind myself of that. Haha

I totally took too long responding and people ninja'd me! Thanks Gillian! You better have Zeus for 20 more years! I wanna see grizzled old Zeus-man pictures! =P

Thanks M2G! I want her to live forever.

Rest peacefully, Lacey.

Tee hee... I remember telling a lady that my horse was green and that he was only five. She made a face and said, "you've been showing him here for years. I'd have thought for sure he was at least ten...". She made me think. I counted back the years and Oh my! She was right! He was like 11 at the time... He'll be 26 in March. They do grow quickly don't they? Just like children. The years seem to fly by! Have no fear, 25 is the new 15!

Too right! Just like 40 is the new 30 for humans ;)

I'd say it's pretty unlikely you'd walk out and find her dead in the paddock one day unless she's had a pretty dramatic accident/illness. Horses dont tend to just pass away due to old age, they go downhill slowly, slow down, loose heaps of weight and can't put it back on, get sick etc. Unfortunately it's usually up to the owner to make that final decision of when to have them PTS.

My old black horse did. He was standing there in the paddock one moment and the next. He was gone. Of course I always thought he was 30 years old but his previous owner swore he was closer to 40.

My biggest fear was making that decision. My husband and I had a deal that he would make the call so I wouldn't have to. I think the old black horse knew I couldn't do it. He did it for me.
