Working for free

Has anyone done this? How did it work out for you?

There are really no barns within an hours drive by me that are hiring and I've only got about 1 1/2 years experience with horses. Thats not much! So, in an attempt to gain more working experience, I've posted an add on Craigslist.

Here is what the add says..

Working two jobs or just have no time to care for your horse or barn?

I am a 20yr hard working, dependable female. Stables are currently not hiring so I am looking for a way to keep up my experience with horses. I have worked around horses, owned one of my own, and helped care for a 36 horse barn.

I am willing to muck stalls, water, feed, bathe, groom, and keep up the stables for a few hours a day 4-5 days a week or more for FREE! Thats right, FREE! I realize that the economy is at its lowest right now and people are struggling. Let me make life a little bit easier while at the same time, keeping up my experience.

The only catch is that I have a full time job that comes first. My schedule at work is ever changing but I will keep you posted every week with the days and times that I can come out.

E-mail me with any questions or concerns that you may have. I look forward to hearing from you!

....What do you think?

I guess I wouldnt work for free... maybe work to be able to get some rides on their horses or if they do lessons. Or maybe a ride to a couple shows.

But if you think that is your only means to get the horses experience then go for it...

It's not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.

I definately agree with Angel.. I think you could charge a small fee and easily get away with that.. I would pay you to come out and clean and get a chance to mess around with my horses even for a semi moderate rate.. That would be a help to me in that my time could be devoted more towards training and other work with them! Dont sell yourself short!

I've worked for free. It was fun for awhile when I could ride the finished horses, but eventually they got sold. Then I was working to ride some half broke colts. Still ok. Then it became I worked to ride hardly even started colts (One week or less). Yeah I know I learned a lot, but the fun was getting depleted. Walks and turns in a 18' by 18' pen isn't all that great. Finally, when I started doing MORE chores for free AND started training horses for the trainer I got fed up. I was doing most of the work and not getting a cent. Actually, I had to do more chores in order to be "allowed" to "ride". That's translated to pretty much forced to train the 4 y/o stud. Then the tornado came and I worked and worked. For nothing then, just out of charity I guess.

That's just my experience with it. You'll learn a lot, but who you work for may quickly take adavantage of you. Oh I forgot to mention, along with "chores" went the role of babysitter and personal pony for a 2 y/o and a 5 y/o. *sigh*

Either way it's up to you

I went down to the stable where I take lessons and worked for 5 hours today. For free. I think the experience is invaluable. That said, I think you are offering too much for free. 4-5 days! I think that you can definitely look for something that is little pay, or with other perks and benefits instead.

Lol it would be 4-5 days because I know me! I'll want to go back every day! I tried for 3 months to exchange work for lessons but never heard a word.
I think what might happen is that a lady right next to my riding instructor purchased a house that had 4 abandoned horses on it. I think I will go out there and help her care for them and get them into condition.

She is letting them go for free if anyone is interested?
I'll post more once I get pictures, ages, breeds, and sexes! =D
