I would make it a couple hours at a time in the beginning - not only do you not want him getting sick by gorging on fresh grass, but it will likely be even better for his anxiety if you take him away, reward him with grass, and then bring him back to his friend. Let him calm down about never seeing his friend again, and repetition is always key - even after he's used to the grass, it could be very helpful for his anxiety to go spend days in the paddock and then nights with his friend. The more you take him away and return him, the more accustomed he's going to get to it!
